Wonder Woman Drinking Glass

Power Pal (and co-host of The Power Records Podcast) Chris Franklin sent me this pic of a Wonder Woman drinking glass that uses the Neal Adams artwork from the Wonder Woman: The Secret of the Magic Tiara Power record!

I didn't know this existed, and Chris tells me there's no other copyright data on it to indicate if it was part of a larger line, some sort of merchandising campaign, etc. He does point out that the artwork has been redrawn slightly, to include Steve Trevor in the background. It's a handsome item, to be sure.

Considering that a lot of Power Records were done by Adams' Continuity Studios, it shouldn't be surprising that a lot of the artwork was deemed worthy for merchandising, given its iconic nature. Still, this is one of the few examples I can think of something from a Power Record was reused like this.

Thanks Chris!

Wonder Woman Ad

For some reason, the DC and Marvel records never got advertised all that much in the Warren mags (at least compared to some of the other licenses), so this Wonder Woman offering from Eerie #95 jumped out at me. I'm not familiar with that other LP, but it sure looks like fun!

Wonder Woman: 3 Action-Packed Stories

A few weeks ago this site posted some pics of heretofore-unknown Peter Pan cassettes, sold on individual rack cards. Now, thanks to the Wonder Woman Collectors site, we have this nice pic of the Wonder Woman release, featuring three stories with all-new card art.

I love that Peter Pan--always cost-conscious--actually spent the extra few cents to do a die-cut on the top of the cards, when they could have gone with a flat square. It shows that PP wasn't entirely phoning it in at this point, and of course that's nice to know.

If you check the back of the card (seen here), there were also cassettes in this format released for Superman, Batman, and The Hulk, Spider-Man. The hunt goes on!

Wonder Woman - 2 Exciting Stories Japanese Edition

I found this while doing a Power Records Google Image search...what the Hera is this?!? Did Power Records make it all the way to Japan? At first I thought it was some modern-day re-release, but if so why would anyone bother slapping the Peter Pan logo on there (bottom left)?

The Power Records story just keeps getting bigger...

Wonder Woman by Dick Giordano

This beautiful, iconic Wonder Woman shot by the late, great Dick Giordano appeared in the 1976 Super DC Calendar. Of course, Power Records fans are familiar with, because it was used on the back cover--albeit significantly changed--for the one of the Wonder Woman LPs:

Wonder Woman - Secret of the Magic Tiara

Another discovery I made recently was this 45" edition of Wonder Woman - Secret of the Magic Tiara with a cover I've never seen before. I don't recognize the art style at all, it doesn't look like any other sleeve Peter Pan produced at the time. Questions, questions!

Wonder Woman: The Secret of the Magic Tiara Original Art

A page of Rich Buckler's wonderful original art to the "The Secret of the Magic Tiara" book and record set. Be careful of that Mitch fella, Wonder Woman!

I (ahem) wonder why the page is noted as "Wonder Woman #35"?

Superman Wonder Woman Batman - Exciting Christmas Stories

Tracks:
Light Up The Tree, Mr. President
Christmas Carol Caper
The Prisoner of Christmas Island

The only instance I can think of what we nowadays call a "variant", Power Records issued the same Christmas-themed LP featuring original stories starring Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman with two different covers, swapping the background color and changing the title treatment. I can only assume they were released different years...why they felt the need to change the cover art is a mystery probably lost to the ages.

I never even knew they did this at all until my POWER RECORDS PODCAST co-host Chris Franklin mentioned to me that his copy had the red background, while mine has the green. The things you learn!

Wonder Woman - The Secret of the Magic Tiara Original Art

sg sg
Here's the beautiful original art for Wonder Woman: The Secret of the Magic Tiara book and record set by the legendary Rich Buckler. About as iconic as it gets, weird capitalization notwithstanding!

If you look close, you can see some very minor tweaks made to Diana's face for the printed version--it seems editors just can't resist fiddling with final art after it comes in, no matter who is doing the work. Man, have I been there, and I'm not Rich Buckler or John Romita!

Wonder Woman - The Prisoner of Christmas Island

Track:
Prisoner of Christmas Island

Power Records re-purposed (of course they did) two of the three Christmas-themed stories they produced featuring Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman as solo 45" releases, with new sleeve art (in this case, it looks like the work of Dick Giordano to me) on both the front and back. With the Santa-driven piece on the back cover, I'm guessing these were all released in October and November, trying to cash in on the lucrative Christmas shopping season.

Strangely, I have yet to find the Batman story--"Christmas Carol Caper"--as a separate 45", which makes no sense to me at all. Batman was a big Power Records star, and they had the material on hand, so...? I guess that will be another question I have to find the answer to when I work on my as-yet-started Power Records coffee table book.

Wonder Woman - The Return of Brunhilde

Track:
The Return of Brunhilde

All five of the stories from Songs and Stories About The Justice League of America LP were reissued as 45"s, but only Wonder Woman got one all to herself. I don't have this actual record, so I'm not sure what, if anything, Power Records did to fill the grooves, since this story is about the same length as the ones starring Aquaman, Flash, Metamorpho, and Plastic Man.

As always, wonderful (heh), iconic sleeve art by Neal Adams.

Wonder Woman LP - 1977

sg

A solid collection of two Wonder Woman stories, featuring some superb art by Neal Adams and his Continuity Studios crew.

The art for this collection is a lot more detailed than a lot of of the other Power Records' sets, and a little eye-opening--the Amazon on page 3 of the "Amazons From Space" story is pretty bodacious for what's supposed to be a kids' record!

No producer credits, but your friend and mine, Arthur Korb, seems like a safe bet.

Wonder Woman LP

sg

Tracks:

Overall, three decent Wonder Woman adventures--I think playing up the Amazon Princesses' mythological background is a good idea (here and in the comics, and even in any future WW movie), since it helps distinguish her from Superman and Batman, who have a much richer Rogues Gallery to tackle.

According to Neal Adams' own checklist, he did not draw either of the covers here. The front cover looks like pure Dick Giordano to me, but the back cover looks like Adams pencils, at least--but I'm sure Neal is a better authority on what he's drawn than I am.

No producer or writer credits.

Wonder Woman - The Secret of the Magic Tiara

No credits anywhere on here--Arthur Korb again?

The cover is by Neal Adams, with inside art by Rich Buckler and Dick Giordano. A fun little adventure, Buckler really gives the story dynamic heft with his exciting layouts.

Wonder Woman has always been a bigger seller in merchandising than in the comics, so I bet more kids read this Wonder Woman story than any of her comics from this time.
